Markers located west of the city of Jackson still show the sites of these salt works today. Clarke County’s boundaries are formed by the banks of the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers.


city of JacksonThe city of Jackson is the largest city in Clarke County. The city of Jackson is named for Andrew Jackson, President of the United States. Recreational activities consist of a nine-hole golf course with a community house, a public park with ball fields, playgrounds, and a walking track. There are also fabulous shops, fine dining, museums and more.


Alabama Southern Community College is a state-supported, fully accredited, comprehensive two-year college serving southwest Alabama through two campuses and two centers. The College offers a wide range of excellent university transfer and career programs. Highly qualified faculty and small classes mean big academic rewards for students.


The Alabama Technology Network is a not-for-profit organization composed of ten centers that links the University of Alabama System, Auburn University, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, and two-year colleges. The ATN centers work in a coordinated effort to improve economic development opportunities in the state.


Located at the heart of the south and between two rivers, the Tombigbee and the Alabama, Clarke County boasts some of the best hunting and fishing in the United States. Millers Ferry on the Alabama River has been featured for numerous national fishing tournaments as well as thousands of local tournaments. Claiborne and Dannelly Reservoirs on the Alabama River both provide extensive opportunities for water-related recreation. The Scotch Wildlife Management Area, encompassing 18,207 acres near the Chilton community, draws hunters each year during the season.  Deer, feral hog, turkey, dove, squirrel, quail, rabbit, raccoon, and fox are hunted in season.
